HAVANA, CUBA, July 22, 2005 /Cuban Democratic Directorate/-- Reports from Havana at early hours of the morning indicate that a growing number of human rights activists have been detained or threatened by State Security agents and Fast Response Brigades.

“Early in the morning today a group from the Revolution Defense Committee, along with Cuban Communist Party and State Security agents arrived at our home and told us that nobody could move from this house and we could not participate in the activity organized for the Assembly to Promote Civil Society in Cuba (APCS). They remained around my house until 10:30 in the morning,” explained Mariana Carballo Castillo, an activist from the Pro Human Rights Party affiliated with the Andrei Sajarov Foundation in Havana.

The same activist informed that various people had been detained early this morning, including  Niurka María Pena, from the APCS, Yosbel Cuéllar, José Rainier Fleitas Fernández, Georgina Noa Montes, Gloria Cristina Rodríguez, and Modesto Leopoldo Valdivia Moreno, all members of the Pro Human Rights Party affiliated with the Andrei Sajarov Foundation.

Similarly, an activist from the Political Rights Defense Association (PRDA), Carlos Manuel Fernández Delgado, informed that State Security agents and Rapid Response Brigades arrived at his home in Marianao since six in the morning, impeding his exit and confiscating his identification document.

The independent journalist, Juan González Febles, revealed that members of the Rapid Response Brigade in Lawton, guided by members of State Security, had agreed to carry out “selective acts of repression” against opposing residents in the area, and these forces had been gathering since early hours in the morning at the intersections of 8th street, San Francisco and Concepción in that municipality.

Other sources from Havana, including the Cuban Commission on Human Rights and the Feminine Humanitarian Front, confirmed the execution of repressive acts against activists such as  Leonardo Miguel Bruzón Ávila, February 24th Movement, León Padrón Ascuit from the Cuban Liberal Movement, as well as acts in front of the homes of Gladis Núñez and Silvio Roberto Herrera.

Mariana Carballo Castillo also informed that the president of the Pro Human Rights Party affiliated with the Andrei Sajarov Foundation, René Montes de Oca Martijas, who was detained on July 13th, will be tried under Case 438 of 2005 for the alleged crime of “Public Disorder” along with other activists, Roberto De Jesús Guerra y Camilo Cairo Falcón.
