CUBAN YOUTH LEADER IS DETAINED AND UNDER A HUNGER STRIKE Authorities threaten Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina, promoter of university autonomy in Cuba September 12, 2005 – Cuban youth leader, Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina is currently detained arbitrarily somewhere in Cuba. Rolando was detained on the road on his way from Holguin to Guantánamo. He was taken to a National Revolutionary Police (NRP) station in Guantánamo, where the director threatened to beat him "savagely." His brother, former prisoner of conscience, Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina, who accompanied him when he was detained, declared, "I think this foreshadows an imminent prison sentence for Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina." On a hunger strike, without having consumed anything in over 3 days, Néstor was able to see Rolando this Sunday, finding his brother in a critical state, lying on the floor and hardly able to speak. According to officials of the NRP in Guantanamo, Rolando was transferred to the provincial tribunal in Matanzas for a case from 1997, a case with which Rolando already complied. Since that moment, Rolando's whereabouts are unknown. On that same day, Néstor was also a victim o f repression and observed agents from the political police filming his activities as he walked through a central location in Guantánamo. At the time of this news release, it is known through familiar sources that Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina is detained in the Beach Police Station in Matanzas and will be transferred to the Jagüey Grande Court in the same province.
