By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Miami, October 17, 2005, Cuban Democratic Directorate. During a first ever encounter that took place this afternoon, Julio Borges, the aspiring Venezuelan presidential candidate for the Justice First Party, Jan Ruml, former Minister of the Interior of the Czech Republic, and Orlando Gutiérrez, National Secretary of the Cuban Democratic Directorate met to exchange ideas on the struggle for democracy. During this workshop called The Power of Ideas: Freedom Against Repression, the Czech Republic’s experience of a transition to democracy from communism was discussed. Many of these issues are now faced by both Cuba and Venezuela.

“I am profoundly familiar with communism, and my experience tells me that it fails anywhere it is attempted, from the Soviet Union, Vietnam, Cambodia, to Cuba and Venezuela,” emphasized Jan Ruml during his presentation. During the workshop, certain topics of interest to Latin America were discussed such as the upcoming year’s presidential elections in various countries. “We Latin Americans have not been effective when combining social justice and freedom. It is important to reiterate that people will reach welfare only through the exercise of freedom,” stated Julio Borges.

Orlando Gutiérrez also acknowledged the importance of Cuba’s freedom for the democratic stability of Latin America: “Democracy will continue to be threatened in Latin America as long as Castro remains in power. Cuba’s liberty is the key for Latin America’s democratic stability.”
