CUBAN POLITICAL PRISONER ANTUNEZ ON HUNGER STRIKE
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

His sister denounces his situation

CUBA, November 15, 2005. — The political prisoner, Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez” declared himself on a hunger strike today as his sister, Bertha Antunez, informed from Placetas, Cuba. According to a telephone conversation between Bertha Antunez and the Cuban Democratic Directorate, her brother demands to be transferred to a cell where he can read, since his current cell is with hundreds of dangerous prisoners who are often violent; he also asks for the right to call his family because he has not been permitted to communicate with them for a long time.

“My brother has been in prison for many years and has many health problems as a result. He is not in good condition to be carrying out a hunger strike. We are worried about his situation and we ask for international support to denounce my brother’s condition, for everyone to know that he is not asking for anything out of the ordinary, he is simply asking for his most basic rights that are being denied. As a family, we demand that they respect his rights and we will not allow for Jorge Luis to die on strike for rights which are due to him,” affirmed Bertha Antúnez.

Antúnez is currently imprisoned in Prisión Kilo 7 in Camaguey, and recently had letters confiscated in which he denounced human rights violations in the prison, and he demonstrated solidarity with other political prisoners in nearby prisons.

The Cuban Democratic Directorate joins this family’s struggle in defense of a man who has served 15 years in prison for his ideas of liberty and democracy for Cuba.
