International Campaign in Support of The Ladies in White

The International Committee of Women for Democracy in Cuba demands human rights for Cuban women

 

 

The Ladies in White have not been permitted to leave Cuba to receive the Sakharov Prize awarded to them by the European parliament. In response to this injustice, the International Committee of Women for Democracy in Cuba (ICWDC) has mobilized worldwide to demand the right of the Ladies in White to receive the award and to denounce the violation of the rights of the Cuban women.

 

In Eastern Europe, women from Slovakia and the Czech Republic protested via a press release demanding that the Ladies in White be allowed to travel to receive their prize in Strasbourg. Former President Vaclav Havel and president of the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba (ICDC) wrote a letter declaring his support for the ladies in White and his censure of the decision not to let them travel.

 

In Latin America the former president of Uruguay and member of the ICDC, Luis Alberto Lacalle, made a telephone call to Laura Pollan in Havana, in which he expressed his utmost support for the endeavors of the Ladies in White. Also, Congresswoman Sandra Etcheverry of Uruguay and member of the (ICWDC) along with Soledad Murgan and Congressman Jaime Trobo made a telephone call to Laura Pollan to express their solidarity. In Costa Rica, a mass was celebrated for the Ladies in White. In attendance were Congresswoman Elvia Navarro, reporter Adriana Núñez, Mireya Zamora from the Libertarian Party, and activist Maria Milagros Mendez, all members of the ICWDC.

 

In Mexico, Congresswoman Maria Guadalupe Suárez, member of the ICWDC in Mexico accompanied by other members of the ICWDC and members of the International Youth Committee for Democracy in Cuba placed a floral arrangement and photo display at the Jose Marti monument on paseo de la Reforma, esquina Hidalgo, in support of the Ladies in White

 

In Argentina, a Declaration Project was elaborated by congresswoman Alicia Comelli (MPN, Neuquén) in which she seeks to "manifest repugnance at the Cuban regime for impeding the travel of the representatives of the Ladies in White to Strasbourg, France to receive the Sakharov Prize for Human Rights awarded by the European Parliament.” The initiative of Alicia Comelli was accompanied by the signatures of national members of congress, Andrés Zotto (Renovation Party of Salta) and PRO party members Federico Pinedo, Paula Bertol y Esteban Bullrich.

 

Also in Miami, the ICWDC and the Cuban Democratic Directorate celebrated a religious event at the Saint John Bosco Church with the participation of Monsenior Emilio Vallina, and the attendance of various exile organizations such as MAR por Cuba, The Coalition of Cuban-American Women, the Municipalities of Cuba in Miami and representatives of the Christian Liberation Movement together with Yolanda Huerga Cedeño, of the Ladies in White now in exile.
