Government-organized mobs attack human rights activists in Cuba
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Eliécer Consuegra Rivas, leader of the Eastern Democratic Alliance, informed the Cuban Democratic Directorate via a telephone call. A group of human rights activists from the municipality of Moa in the province of Holguin, were physically attacked by a violent mob organized by State Security. Further information was also transmitted by the independent journalist, Juan Carlos Garcel Pérez from the Eastern Free Press Agency who resides in the same municipality.

“I found Omar Pérez Torres, activist from the Pedro Luís Boitel National Movement for Civil Resistance, unconscious, with his head broken, bruises all over his body, and he was bleeding from his nose and mouth; they beat him cruelly. But the citizens from that area, after witnessing the beating, protested vehemently against the aggressors and in defense of the activist,” informed Garcel Pérez from Moa.

Eliécer Consuegra Rivas told Directorio that residents from Moa are out on the streets in the center of the town protesting against these acts of violence. He also affirmed that the government brought automobiles from outside with workers from the “Che Guevara” nickel mines to participate in the aggression.

Other activists were also beaten in that area: lawyer José Manuel de la Rosa Pérez, member of the Cuban Liberal Movement, the Orthodox Party, and legal counsel for the Eastern Democratic Alliance, who was sitting in the Pedro Soto Alpa park when he was beaten and arrested, his current whereabouts unknown; activist Alejandro Aranda Martínez who is member of the Pedro Luís Boitel National Movement for Civil Resistance was also arrested and his current whereabouts are unknown.

On February 15th, the Spiritual Leaders, an ecumenical group that brings together the largest Christian denominations in the Cuban exile community, called for the Cuban people to not participate in these violent acts that are being organized and promoted by the Cuban regime, and to say no to violence.
