International legislators and political activists denounce repression in Cuba

Various groups of legislators and activists from throughout the world have launched an appeal to the World to denounce the repression against human rights activists in Cuba. More than a dozen Argentinean members of congress presented a declaration before the House of Representatives numbered 7017-D-05, which condemns the “Actos de Repudio” (repressive acts) against Cuban opposition.


The national representatives Federico Pinedo, Eugenio Burzaco, Pablo Tonelli, Alicia Comelli, Jorge Vanossi, Paula Bertol, Nora Ginzburg, Guillermo Alchouron, Omar De Marchi, Esteban Bullrich, Hugo Martini, Eusebia Jerez and Esteban Jerez signed the document that status the following:


“These actions constitute a flagrant violation of article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states: ‘No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honor and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.’


“We demand that the Cuban regime cease the hostility and uphold its duty to protect life and the physical integrity of those who simply exercise an inalienable right which is secured under the Universal Declaration of human rights. This right is expressed in Article 19 of said document: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.’”


Additionally, the International Women’s Committee for Democracy in Cuba, which is constituted by women from Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, and Spain, among others, made an appeal to international public opinion. The women demand that the Cuban regime “immediately cease these brutal attacks and protect the lives of these people who seek fundamental rights delineated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”


The distinguished female figures who signed this declaration were: María Milagros Méndez, Costa Rica; Adriana Núñez, Costa Rica; Rep. Morelia García, Guatemala; Rep. Adriana González Carrillo, Mexico; Rep. Guadalupe Suárez Ponce, México; Rep. Blanca Gámez Gutiérrez, Mexico; Rep. Sheyla Aragón, Mexico; Michaela Lednova, Slovakia; Natalia Bellusova, Spain; María Reviriego, Argentina; Mercedes Llanos, Argentina; Constanza Mazzina, Argentina; Flavia Vecellio, Argentina; Edil Blanca Repetto, Uruguay; Soledad Murgan, Uruguay; Kristina Prunerova, Czech Republic; y Renata Kalenska, Czech Republic.
