Havana, Cuba, March 13th, 2006. Members of the Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy (CYMD) in an unprecedented symbolic act realized two simultaneous activities to commemorate the assault on the presidential palace and the death of Jose Antonio Echeverria, leader of the Student Revolutionary Directorate in 1957.

The first activity was a march of young Cubans toward the University in Havana and deposited an offering of white roses in memory of those who died on that day. Alexei Escudero, delegate of the CYMD in Havana, explained to the Cuban Democratic Directorate via a telephone call that 6 students and activists members of the CYMD deposited the floral offering at 8:00am today.

The second activity consisted of a pilgrimage of youth from the house where José Antonio Echeverría in the city of Cárdenas in Matanzas to the tomb where his remains are found.

“This is an action that marks a milestone in the struggle of young Cubans for democracy and liberty. It is one more demonstration that we are committed to this civic struggle, and that nothing will hold us back. Today, March 13th, the student movement has given an example on the streets of our nation to honor the memory of this great man,” declared Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina from the city of Cardenas after the pilgrimage.

The Cuban Democratic Directorate salutes the efforts of the youth leaders of the CYMD in their attempt to rescue the civil values of Cuban university students, and in our people’s struggle for liberty. José Antonio Echeverría’s legacy is still alive in the heart of young Cubans today.
