CUBAN POLITICAL PRISIONER IS DENIED MEDICAL ATENTION

Librado Linares García denouces cruelty and repression

Ariza Prison, Cienfuegos. In a statement sent from the Ariza prison by Cuban prisoner of conscience Librado Linares García, and confirmed by his wife, Magaly Broche de la Cruz, he informed that for the past week he has been denied medication that his own family took to the prison.

Political prisoner Librado Linares García was transferred on March 30th to Ariza Provincial Prison after having been diagnosed with epitheliopathy, which has caused him to lose 90% of his vision in his left eye and has also affected his right eye. According to the specialists who diagnosed him, stress is the main obstacle in treating this disease, and his worsening condition could culminate in irreparable damage to his eye.

“What they are doing is a complete injustice! In addition to the fact that my husband remains in conditions that worsen his health, now they deny him his medications which we took ourselves because the authorities said they did not have them. What is happening is truly unjust, and we call on the world, including human rights organizations and democratic countries, to help us in this moment,” declared Broche de la Cruz from Camajuaní, Villa Clara, through a telephone conversation with the Cuban Democratic Directorate.

According to Linares García, the authorities hide behind the fact that they do not have his medical records in their possession, although they should have followed him when he was transferred. However, this justification does not change the difficult situation of the prisoner, since the medications brought to him by his family are in the prison’s clinic and he cannot access them. Various human rights activists throughout the world who have been able to communicate with Ariza Prison have been denied any information about this case.

Librado Linares García is the Secretary General of the Cuban Reflection Movement, based out of Camajuaní, Villa Clara, and was imprisoned in March 2003 as part of the repressive wave that took 75 independent journalists and activists to prison in Cuba.
