INCREASE IN THE PRESENCE OF ANTI-GOVERNMENT SIGNS AND THE UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE MOVEMENT IN CUBA
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

According to various independent sources in Cuba, there has been a significant increase during the past weeks in the number of anti-government signs promoting the opposition movement. In a press release from Santiago de Cuba, dated and published by Cubanet on March 29th, Virgilio de la O, an independent journalist of the Eastern Free Press Agency states a summary of all the signs that have appeared in the city of Santiago de Cuba and other towns such as Palmarito de Cauto, Mella, San Luis, Alto Songo, y La Maya, among others. Various phrases expressed in the signs read: “¡Down with Fidel!” and “¡Freedom for the 75!”

Other information from Havana, Camagüey, and Ciego de Ávila, among other provinces and cities of the island, states that these signs have been placed in public places frequented by citizens of the area, including the State Security headquarters and government entities.

These reports coincide with statements given by neighbors that have refused to cooperate with these acts of repression that, since July of 2005, have been organized by the government to attack human rights activists in Cuba. They also concur with articles published for the official press of the island, in which they complain about the lack of productivity and efficiency of Cuban businesses.
